Silicon photonics for next generation computing systems

The growing need for faster and more efficient data processing in AI, ML, HPC, and cloud data centers necessitates the development of advanced interconnect solutions. Imec’s Optical I/O R&D program aims to substantially scale optical interconnects by leveraging silicon photonics with advanced packaging to achieve multi-Tbps/mm bandwidths and energy consumption below several pJ/bit for data transfer. This talk will present recent breakthroughs in silicon photonics technology at imec, assessing their potential to meet the performance and efficiency demands of future AI, ML and HPC systems.
