GaN power electronics technology: imec’s research roadmap

GaN power devices have entered mass production as breakthrough technology in many application fields.  The technology is however still young, and while production capacity is ramping up, many improvements for the existing components, and innovation in device architectures, substrates, materials, and level of integration are being developed by an increasingly larger research community. 

With our research roadmap, we address challenges to increase the voltage range and level of integration.  We add novel type of components to the technology portfolio. We propose innovative solutions in device architectures and substrates to unlock the full potential of the GaN Power Electronics Technologies.  In this presentation, we present our achievements and future plans for short term industrial needs, longer term innovation, and the upscaling to 300mm substrate diameter.
