The decarbonization challenge lies upstream
The semiconductor industry is living a paradox - on one hand enabling major decarbonization efforts worldwide while on the other hand its own emissions are continuously growing. Manufacturers have already announced and started ambitious reduction efforts, but are so far mostly focusing on Scope 1 and 2 emissions. However, a holistic semiconductor decarbonization strategy must also include supply chains emissions - more challenging to understand and abate as they are outside of manufacturers' direct influence. As a step towards more transparency, we have calculated scope 3 upstream emissions of the semiconductor industry based on consumption of raw materials and will discuss most relevant factors and potential levers for abatement.
