New decade of the brain
In terms of complexity, the brain is like the universe. Not only are there 86 billion nerve cells in the brain and 100 billion stars in a galaxy, but also the total length of fibers in the brain is longer than the diameter of the sun.

EBRAINS sets out to revolutionize our understanding of the brain and improve brain health and technology. We provide integrated tools, data and models for seamless collaboration and knowledge exchange.

Our treasure trove is the EBRAINS knowledge space which provides integration of data and models across scales, in the same reference space and matched to data.

The jewel in the crown is the EBRAINS knowledge loop which enables interoperability of data, models and tools, all represented in the knowledge space. The loop starts with empirical data, followed by the formulation of mechanisms and models, the creation of simulated data, the analysis and validation and finally the application of inference tools to understand underlying causes and generate insights.

Ample applications in personalized medicine will follow. As an example, by producing computational extensions of existing brain imaging data, epileptogenic brain areas can be identified outside of those that are clinically accessible.

Centrality of brain health is increasingly recognized. Predictive power of integrated brain models will be one of the game-changers in enabling clinical solutions for complex diseases of the brain.
