Tom Nijsen - Account Manager, Flux50

Flux50 is the membership organization that helps Flanders gain international recognition as a Smart Energy Region. Flux50 facilitates cross-sector collaboration between energy, IT and building companies to enhance the competitiveness of the Flemish smart energy industry in the transition towards low carbon systems. 

Tom Nijsen is Account Manager for Flux50 and enjoys connecting all innovative organisations in the energy sector. On-stage as well as off-stage, Tom likes to act as an energetic inspirator based on his personal experience with smart energy management solutions for already more than 10 years in his so-called homelab KermtStroomt. At home, Tom installed his rooftop PV in 2007, the first energy monitoring system in 2012, the first home-battery in 2016, a solar carport in 2021 and an extra hybrid home-battery system in 2022. From 2018 Tom developed his own smart charging infrastructure to balance all energy assets at the optimal price, including an EV that is shared with 7 neighbours.

Tom graduated in 2000 as electrical engineer at GroepT in Leuven. He worked for 7 years as an IT Solution Developer, before entering the energy sector in 2007. For energy supplier Luminus Tom worked untill 2011 as an internal governance consultant to improve internal processes. After that Tom was for 5 years IT/Enterprise Architect for Infrax, later merged to Fluvius, the Flemish distribution grid operator.

Before joining Flux50 in 2020, Tom was Smart Energy Innovathor at the T2-campus in Genk, where he developed an operational Smart Grid lab and Battery lab to provide innovative training courses like the first-of-a-kind 'Battery Specialist' training in 2018.
