Biography

Siegfried Mercelis - Assistant Professor, ID Lab, an imec research group at Antwerp University

Siegfried Mercelis is Assistant Professor at the University of Antwerp, and Program Manager of the AI applications program at the imec-IDLab research group, leading a team of 30+ researchers that focus on bringing AI to industry. His team is active in domains such as process control, autonomous shipping, logistics and mobility. He personally oversees the Sustainable Process Control research track, focusing on hybrid modelling and reinforcement learning to control and optimize HVAC, thermal grids, water treatment and chemical & pharmaceutical processes. 

Siegfried Mercelis received his master’s degrees in music production and engineering (electronics-ICT) in 2008 and 2012 respectively. He received the VIK award for his master thesis on data structures for parallel computing. From 2012 to 2016 he was employed at Van den Berghe R&D under a Baekeland PhD mandate on optimizing and parallelizing real time media applications, for which he received his PhD in applied engineering in 2016 at the University of Antwerp. After his PhD he joined the IDLab research group at the University of Antwerp, researching AI for embedded and industrial applications.
